In looking over the new newsletter (no you guys don't have it yet) Laughing It seems to be conflicted. The calender says that next month will be the women's rodeo and then a fun fly. On another page it says there will be a race and ladies rodeo.

I was not aware of anyone volunteering for a fun fly at the meeting and the default contest is a race. What gives? Anyone have a clue? Officers?

It makes a major difference to me in getting another racer ready. If we don't have another race until August I'm not sure it's worth dedicating all the special equipment for it.

I was impressed with the many participants we had last Sunday. I would hate to see folks get discouraged from racing by the lack of scheduled events.

From my understanding, a fun fly was originally scheduled at the organizational meeting. Bill is the CD of the fun fly and decided there was more interest in a race so it had been changed. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I think the dates have been changed to the 17th for the cook out (that isn't even mentioned in the calender in the newsletter)and the 18th for the race because Mother's Day is the 11th. I think Adam is right. There was originally scheduled a fun fly for May at the organizational meeting but there was no one to CD it so it automatically reverts to a race. Tony's part of the newsletter, or is it Darlene's?......anyway it says there is a cook out on the 17th and race and rodeo on the 18th. This seems to be the most current information.

Sorry that you are getting mixed signals Charles.

Well,

It's a race again Mad

Sure wish this would have been published a couple months ago. I would not have spent the $$ and time on a FunFly plane Rolling Eyes

It’s crape like this why I stopped flying in club events at the field a couple years ago, why I was a fool to planning to this year No

Hey,

Don't throw that new airplane away yet.

I think the problem is in the logistics. There was talk at the organizational meeting about having another fun fly but there was no one to CD it. See my post elsewhere about getting the schedule approved by the membership. This would help us all tremendously.

I will volunteer to CD a fun fly in June. I think that's when we have the war bird fly in but it's not really a contest. You just show up and fly and get points. We could combine a regular action packed, events for points, fun fly with the war bird fly in. The criteria for warbirds is pretty loose anyway.

Just some thoughts. I agree wioth Charles that it is pretty difficult to have an event specific plane whether it's for fun flys or racing or giant aircraft if you fly it once a year or less in some cases.

Just my thoughts. I'll bet you guys wish I wasn't postinhg here.

Charles don't sell the plane as we will have FunFly's this year and hopefully next year also. They are a BLAST!

Joe, thanks for offering to CD a FunFly

The date of May 11th was changed a while back (January or February, I believe) due to the 11th being Mothers' Day. This was brought up at the meeting, however I do not recall seeing it in the news letter.

I agree, it takes time(and money or lots of good luck) to fill the hanger required to participate in all of our differant events (races, bats, Giant Fly, war bird etc.) I was really bummed out last year when I learned I could not fly during the Giant Fly as I did not have an IMAA approved plane. So, I just waited until the event was over. It was only one day and only a few hours at that. No biggy!

Charles, you do a great job of running this site. We are thankful for you and your family's time and effort you all put into it.

I offer my appology to anyone who may have been upset, let down, disappointed or anything else from this change of events.

I joined this club to have fun and fly. I hope you all did too.

No big problem,

Just a let down when $$$ is tight and I have to pick out what both JR and I can fly and participate in. Charlie was looking forward to the FunFly as it's something he can fly in and not just work. Kind of goes back to what we were talking about over the weekend, how do we get new members in and keep them? Then the frist thing we do is set up all but a couple contest to exclude new members from flying in Rolling Eyes

As for me I have about done it all, and have the shirt to prove it.

And with some help from an un-named member and I will have that shirt next year Wink

I hope I haven't added any negativity to this discussion.

I do think we need to have at least four races a year to make the investment in equipment worthwhile. Specific airplane, motor, and practice, practice, practice. We have, in the past few years added a proliferation of "contests" where people just show up, fly, draw cards, and go home. I do think this encourages participation of the beginner but leaves little challenge for the experienced modeler. The pattern contest has two classes. Years ago even racing had a novice class where everyone raced together but the results were computed seperately so if you were a new comer to racing the first season you could win the novice class without having to beat the "big boys". You only were scored with those in your class. Fun flys could be classes with different airplanes like pattern. There could be novice, sport and advanced.

The bottom line for me is that I think we need to be challenged in our contests but not beat to death. The Forkettes have competition in their rodeo. Should we be any less?

I will be glad to get more involved and help with or CD other fun type contests.

I do understand the frustration when an event is changed or postponed or sometimes just not held for no particular reason like the cross country events.

Mike, I think you are doing a great job of taking the bull by the horns. The problem is that running this club is sometimes more like trying to herd chickens single handedly. Tough task.

Again, I will be glad to CD a fun fly right along with/instead of/or on a completely different day as the Warbird fly In in June if you guys want. Those who want to get involved can and those who don't really don't have to. We just need to discuss it at the next meeting.

With the amount of individuals we have that race, we could hold two events back to back bounce

And with the races, why not have a novice class Question Question We have the field set up, let the novice run what they have to fly Smile I would love to see a heat of new members taking trainers out on the course... let them learn the basics with something they could learn on and then when they are ready they can move up.
Could set the novice class up with 1/2 points so it would pay for them to move up in class when thay are ready.

I know Charlie wants to participate in all the events but the races. But I know if he could take his trainer out and race it he would. And he would get over the affraid and would move up to the other class.

Just my thoughts flower

And the thing is, usually all it takes is someone to race a few times to get rid of the initial fear and doubts and then those people will quickly get bitten by the bug too! It always happens that way. Wink

I know JR would like it, but the speed and turning just has him done in Sad

But a season flying a trainer learning when to trun, build your lines and control tongue then watch out the following year Wink

I'd hate to count how many scat kats dad and I have been through! That's a lot of racers over the years.

I totally see what youa re saying about getting the course and the whole spinning in circles thing down. It will help.

I remember the last time we did it and we even times people and handicapped the slower planes. Much fun watching trainers battle it out!

I bet we could get several interested, I know JR would jump on it, and I might even fly novice to get back in the grove Wink

I know I asked him if he would try it next year if I got a Viper for him, and it was a flat NO, and the spinning in circles thing was the first thing out of his mouth followed by speed.

Tell him this... You can ALWAYS motor down. On his first Viper, Scat Kat, etc... put a .25 on it until he gets used to taking off and landing and flying it. Then once he gets comfortable, he'll be able to move up to the .40 and it really won't seem to be that big of a difference.

As for the spinning in circles, it's not as bad as it seems cause you are concentrating on your own plane, unless youare dad then you are watching something else totally. Razz

Yes, but your dad is watching at the other end of the course Razz

Yes, I have been thinking about a Viper with our 25 on it as a Funfly option. Just to many projects and not enough $$$$ Wink

I think that's a great idea. I'm sure we could work it out.

There has been some interest from others as well in holding races with something other than the full fledged club racers. The thought I heard was to run the racers on 25's but I really like the run what you brung idea. Those members don't always get to the organizational meetings and so there is little exposure to their ideas and once the schedule is set up it's more difficult to change it. Also, sometimes at the meetings those who are newer to the club may have great ideas but are somewhat hesitant to speak out. I used to be that way. Laughing Not so much any more.

We may need to come up with a way to handicap the entries so it's fair for them all but that should be doable.
